1. The Short Answer
Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數), literally "Purple Star Astrology" or "Purple Star Numerology," is one of the two major Chinese destiny-calculation systems, alongside BaZi. Instead of eight characters, it maps your birth data onto a 12-palace chart — like a wheel divided into twelve houses of life — and populates each palace with stars drawn from a set of 14 major stars plus dozens of minor and adjective stars. Where a star lands, and which of the Four Transformations activates it, is what a reading interprets.
2. Why "Purple Star"?
The system is named after its most important star, Zi Wei (紫微, the "Emperor Star" or "Purple Star"), traditionally associated with the North Star and imperial authority in Chinese astronomy. Zi Wei anchors the entire chart — its position determines where all other major stars fall — which is why the whole system carries its name.
3. How a Chart Is Built
Your birth date and hour (converted to the traditional lunar calendar) determine your Life Palace and Body Palace, then the placement of all 14 major stars across the 12 palaces, and finally which of the Four Transformations (化祿/化權/化科/化忌 — prosperity, power, status, and adversity) land on which stars. This is entirely deterministic: given the same birth data, the chart is always identical, which is why professional software calculates it the same way every time rather than "interpreting" it differently per reading.
4. What a Reading Actually Tells You
Each of the 12 palaces governs a specific life domain — the Life Palace for core personality, the Spouse Palace for marriage, the Career Palace for work, and so on. A reading looks at which stars occupy each palace, their brightness, and any transformations, to describe tendencies in that domain: the type of partner you attract, your natural career direction, how money tends to flow through your life. It is a descriptive framework for self-understanding, not a literal prediction of specific events.
